“Drill-Watch!” Preparing community resources to resist onshore gas exploration in Victoria

In response to recent state government announcements to open up vast areas of agricultural lands to exploration and drilling for gas in the Gippsland and Otway basins, Friends of the Earth propose to create an online resource for communities. The ‘Drill-watch’ website will aim to prepare and empower communities, educate landowners to ensure rigorous assessments are followed, and prevent detrimental impacts on land, water and the community. ‘Drill-watch’ will act as an information and resources hub for communities on the frontline of exploration and drilling applications. It will provide a platform for communities to access and share vital information, build solidarity, and disseminate campaign updates from local areas, including: Updates on the reform of government processes around mining exploration, consultation and approvals; FAQ sheets on the rights and responsibilities of landowners and companies and the impacts of conventional gas mining operations on ecosystems and climate; Cultural information, provided by traditional owner groups; ecological data, including endangered species and places of high ecological significance; Questions to ask if a company seeks to gain access to land, or establishes agreements with landowners; Contact details of local MPs, councils, companies; A feature to allow people to log information about sightings of gas drilling infrastructure, impacts, etc.; Materials suitable for printing for distribution via stalls, at markets and other public events; As the July 2021 deadline nears we will know exactly which areas are likely to experience the first round of exploration. We will aim to hold at least one public forum and launch event in each of these areas to inform and mobilise the community.
