The Social Studio Scholarship Program

The Social Studio empowers young people from refugee backgrounds to achieve their dreams through social enterprise. The main barriers faced by newly arrived members of the community are unemployment, isolation and difficulties accessing education and training. The Social Studio addresses these problems in four ways: creating jobs; providing education; encouraging community engagement and social inclusion. The Social School – Tucker Foundation Scholarshop project would provide targeted scholarships to an additional five young people (aged 18-25) from new migrant and refugee communities to complete the Certificate III in Clothing and Textile Production. Upon acceptance into the program, recipients will work closely with The Social Studio teaching staff and management team to design an individualised training and mentoring program ultimately aimed at achieving employment aligned with the recipient’s area of interest in the clothing and textile production industry on successful completion of the course. Successful recipients will work closely with The Social Studio teaching, support staff and industry partners for the duration of the 18-month program. This could, for example include accessing coaching and support to develop resumes and interview skills; set up banking; improve English literacy and more. Ultimately, this project aims to build on the work already underway at The Social Studio, allowing us to provide even more young people from new migrant and refugee communities the opportunity to develop their style and skills; connect; develop and explore opportunities within a safe and supportive environment that champions the values of diversity, community, education, environmentally sustainable design and ethical business practices.
